Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styren (ABS) is a commonly used and lightweight printing material. ABS is less brittle than PLA and gives better results when printing smaller parts. ABS is prone to cracking when it cools to quick during the print process. Best results are obtained with an enclosed and heated build platform. ABS can handle higher temperatures and does not require an extruder with a fan setup. It does however require a higher temperature to print than PLA (approximately 230°) but it needs less force to extrude because it has a lower friction coefficient.ABS produces mild fumes while printing that are tolerable for most but as a general rule you should always make sure to provide adequate ventilation while printing. ABS tends to warp while printing larger objects so a heated build plate is indispensable for a good result. The build plate offers the best adherence when covered with Kapton or PET tape. ABS juice (ABS dissolved in Acetone) can be applied on top of the tape to get even better adherence. Another way to assure a good print is using a glass plate with 3Dlac. Extrusion temperature or printing temperature lies around 230° The heated bed temp lies around 90°. After starting off with a heated bed temperature of 90° you can gradually lower the bed temp to 70°. This is just one of the neat features that the Smplify3d software has to offer.
